ASTM D6191-97 Testing for Formaldehyde Emissions in Water-Based Coatings

Standard Test Method for Measurement of Evolved Formaldehyde from Water Reducible Air-Dry Coating

ASTM D6191‑97 is used to determine the amount of free (evolved) formaldehyde released from air‑dry, water‑reducible coatings such as latex paints, resin emulsions, and water‑reducible alkyds under controlled laboratory conditions by using UV‑Vis spectrophotometer. The method helps evaluate product safety and compliance with formaldehyde emission requirements.

Key highlights:

  • Evaluates formaldehyde released under controlled laboratory conditions.
  • Applicable to water-reducible air-dry coatings.
  • Uses nitrogen purging to release formaldehyde from the coating.
  • The evolved formaldehyde is collected in deionized water and quantified using a colorimetric acetylacetone method with spectrophotometric measurement at 412 nm.
  • Typical working range: approximately 10–1000 ppm of formaldehyde.

This method helps coating manufacturers and quality laboratories assess product compliance, quality control, and environmental performance.
