Packer and Falling Head Tests: Precision Solutions for Soil Permeability

Advanced Testing Methods for Accurate Assessment of Subsurface Hydraulic Properties

Understanding soil permeability is a critical aspect of geotechnical engineering, directly influencing the safety, stability, and sustainability of construction projects. Accurate evaluation of how water flows through soil and rock strata is essential for foundation design, groundwater control, and environmental protection. Among the most reliable methods for determining permeability are the Packer Test and the Falling Head Permeability Test, each offering unique advantages for specific subsurface conditions.

Packer Test: In-Situ Precision for Rock Formations

The Packer Test is an in-situ testing method widely used to measure the permeability of rock formations, particularly in fractured or jointed strata. This test involves isolating a section of a borehole using inflatable packers and injecting water under controlled pressure. The rate at which water is absorbed into the surrounding rock mass provides valuable insights into permeability characteristics.

Falling Head Permeability Test

The falling head permeability test in boreholes is an insitu method used to determine the permeability (hydraulic conductivity) of low permeability soils, such as silts and clays, directly within a drilled borehole.

The falling head test measures how quickly water level drops (falls) in a borehole over time. The rate of fall is used to calculate the soils ability to transmit water. It is widely used in geotechnical investigations where accurate permeability data is required for Foundation design, Dewatering analysis, Seepage studies and Environmental assessments.
