Reduce Porosity- Concrete water Absorption Testing (BS 1881: Part 122)

Water absorption testing helps evaluate the porosity and durability of concrete, ensuring long-term performance and compliance with Bs 1881: Part 122.

Concrete durability is directly related to its porosity. Excessive pores allow water and harmful chemicals to penetrate the concrete, which may lead to reinforcement corrosion, reduced strength, and a shorter service life.

The water absorption test carried out in accordance with BS 1881: Part 122, is used to determine the amount of water absorbed by hardened concrete. The test provides an indication of the concrete’s porosity and overall quality.

The test involves drying the concrete specimen to a constant mass, immersing it in water for the specified period, and measuring the increase in weight due to water absorption. Lower water absorption values indicate denser concrete with better durability and resistance to environmental exposure.

Benefits of Water Absorption Testing

  • Evaluates concrete porosity and durability.
  • Assesses the quality of hardened concrete.
  • Supports quality control during construction.
  • Helps ensure compliance with project specifications and BS 1881: Part 122.
  • Identifies potential durability issues before they become critical.
